Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic diffuse musculoskeletal pain, often involving altered sensitivity to cold, heat, and mechanical stimuli, as well as symptomology including fatigue, depression, and anxiety.

The acid-saline rat model (Sluka et al, 2001) allows for pre-clinical evaluation of therapeutics aimed at amelioration of centrally-mediated, non-inflammatory pain conditions such as fibromyalgia. Behavioural measures that may be assessed in this model include mechanical allodynia, visceral hypersensitivity, and muscle hyperalgesia. Testing for anhedonia, depression, and anxiety is also available. Histopathology may be performed to investigate various underlying mechanistic changes in brain and/or spinal cord. If desired, positive controls may be produced through opioid administration to induced animals prior to testing.
